Chapter 18: Truly Fortunate for Jiang Mi to Have Found Such a Husband
“Mom, Dad, I’m home!”
As soon as Wen Zongfu withdrew his gaze, his wife suddenly released his arm with excitement and joy, rushing toward her mother.
She looked like a fledgling returning home; even the strands of her half-tied hair fluttered, revealing her delight.
Wen Zongfu felt a twinge of jealousy but quickly stepped forward to greet his in-laws.
The elderly master of the Jiang family and Jiang Mi’s parents smiled warmly as they exchanged pleasantries with Wen Zongfu. The atmosphere was lively, and the relatives nearby couldn’t help but envy the tall, handsome Wen Zongfu. It was clear Jiang Mi had truly found herself an excellent husband.
With contrast comes attention. Standing aside, Chen Shaojun wore a faint smile as he observed the scene. He had arrived earlier, and the Jiang family had been rather indifferent, but upon Wen Zongfu’s arrival, even the elderly master came out to the hall.
What caught his eye most was Jiang Caiyuan, who was stealing glances at Wen Zongfu, her mind clearly elsewhere.
Chen Shaojun understood the matchmaking game well. He treated Jiang Caiyuan especially well because he knew that even if she had the option to choose a city man, she would choose him without hesitation. That thought filled him with pride.
Yet now, all his joy vanished. When Jiang Caiyuan suddenly turned and met her husband’s cold gaze, her heart sank. She hurried to his side, softly calling, “Shaojun.”
Chen Shaojun’s expression softened slightly but a lingering discomfort remained in his heart.
Jiang Caiyuan even took time to watch if Chen Shaojun glanced at Jiang Mi, but he never once looked her way. Her confidence returned somewhat. As long as she remembered that Chen Shaojun was destined to be the richest man and Wen Zongfu a bankrupt, she could endure the stark contrasts and humiliations before her.
She even wondered if Jiang Mi had begged Wen Zongfu so much just to get him to accompany her back to her home.
Jiang Mi was just too concerned with appearances! She couldn’t believe someone as arrogant as Wen Zongfu would voluntarily accompany her back. Jiang Caiyuan kept making excuses to comfort herself.
When driver Xiao Gao carried the gifts prepared in advance by the Wen family into the courtyard, the relatives were once again stunned.
The finest teas and liquors made their eyes glow with admiration.
“Grandpa, these are all for you,” Wen Zongfu said. When he wanted to please someone, he didn’t need to lower his dignity. Just a couple of warm words from his smile could make anyone feel cherished.
He was the only young master of the factory director’s family! So kind and filial, the elderly master felt at ease, and it showed in how highly he regarded Jiang Mi.
A slight sneer flickered in Jiang Mi’s eyes. Only this marriage with the Wen family could earn favor from such a patriarch who favored sons over daughters.
In this scene, neither Chen Shaojun nor Jiang Caiyuan could redeem their losses. Jiang Ershen, Jiang Mi’s aunt, was so angry she nearly suffered a stroke!
This should have been a great match and a pride for their family!
Now the glory and benefits were all stolen by the third branch. Frustrated, she glared resentfully at Jiang Caiyuan.
Jiang Caiyuan’s smile vanished, replaced by a sullen expression. She clenched her palm tightly, unable to shake off the bitter feeling.
She felt as if Jiang Mi had robbed her of her good fortune, forgetting completely how she had pushed this marriage forward, wanting to see Jiang Mi fall into ruin.
In the end, Jiang Caiyuan couldn’t eat and claimed to feel dizzy, deciding to go home and rest.
She left Chen Shaojun and his two sons at the old residence. Fortunately, Jiang Ershu understood the situation and didn’t treat the new son-in-law coldly, though he did feel uneasy stirred by the radiant third son.
After the meal, Wen Zongfu stayed with his father-in-law and grandfather, drinking quite a lot and lifting the spirits of the Jiang family.
He himself was tipsy. Jiang Mi was helpless, but her mother said, “Xiao Mi, help Zongfu rest at home for a while. It’s still early now; wait until he wakes up in the afternoon before going back.”
“Alright, Mom,” Jiang Mi replied promptly. Xiao Gao, who had just finished eating, came over to help. With Xiao Gao and Jiang Yao, Jiang Mi just needed to lead the way.
Her pre-marriage home had been cleaned spotless by her mother; the bedding still carried the scent of sun-dried freshness. She helped Wen Zongfu settle down and told Xiao Gao to rest too since they’d have to drive later in the afternoon.
Just as she finished arranging everything, there was a knock at the door.
Curious, she went out to open it and found Jiang Caiyuan standing there.
Jiang Caiyuan immediately said, “Jiang Mi, you must be feeling pretty proud, huh?”
“I didn’t expect you to be so scheming, suppressing my spotlight at the welcome banquet. You must have been currying favor with the Wen family these past few days!”
