“More work again. What a rare occurrence today.” A young officer at the police station put down his phone and spoke to his colleague.

“What happened?”

“A violent assault. A concerned citizen called it in. Come on, let’s go.”

.

Mu Chenbei was pinned down by two men. He struggled desperately, but could not break free.

“Who are you? Why did you break into my home?”

“Your home?” The round-faced man in charge echoed, then let out a mocking laugh. “Sorry, I was commissioned by Miss Yu to come and help her buy this property.”

Mu Chenbei’s heart sank. “Miss Yu… Yu Ling?”

“That’s right.” The man looked down at him with undisguised contempt. “You must be Mr. Mu. Miss Yu briefed me before I came. She said that if you refused to leave, I was to throw you out.”

Upon hearing this, Mu Chenbei shook his head frantically. “No, no! You’re lying to me. Yu Ling could never treat me like this.”

“Why would I lie to you? This is Miss Yu’s order.”

Mu Chenbei suddenly began to laugh, his laughter verging on madness.

Yu Ling, could you truly be this heartless?

You were the one who betrayed our relationship first. I merely repaid you in kind. What did I do wrong?

You had already taken up with someone else, yet you still insisted on pretending to be some chaste and virtuous woman. I really misjudged you!

“Mr. Mu, I’ve already called the police. Once you leave, we’ll pack up all your belongings. Miss Yu instructed us that she doesn’t want anything in this house.”

The man might as well have said: You’re about to be taken to the station, and when you come back, you can sleep on the street.

Fortunately, Miss Yu had warned him beforehand that the man currently living in the house was a thug, and told him to bring several more people along. Otherwise, he might have been the one to suffer today.

The man exchanged a glance with the two younger men, then went off alone to inspect the house.

When he saw the utter devastation in the bedroom, he recoiled. The floor was covered in shards of broken glass, leaving scarcely anywhere to step.

“What a beautiful house. What a shame it’s been ruined.”

Zhang Feng muttered to himself, pulled out his phone, and began taking picture after picture. “I’ll photograph everything and send it to Miss Yu.”

After making his way through every room, he had taken dozens of photographs and sent them all to Yu Ling.

As he passed Lin Mianmian, who was barely clinging to life, someone grabbed hold of his trouser leg.

Zhang Feng looked down. A thin, frail hand clutched at his trousers, and a faint moan escaped its owner.

“Help… help me.”

Zhang Feng gave a contemptuous laugh and raised his foot without the slightest hesitation.

Hmph. A scumbag and a shameless woman—a perfect pair.

Before coming, he had already gotten the full story from his younger brother. The man was Miss Yu’s boyfriend, but he had cheated on her with her rival. The two of them had even carried on shamelessly in her house.

It was disgusting beyond words.

As luck would have it, when he had spoken to his younger brother on the phone the previous night, his sister-in-law had been there as well. The couple had been curled up on the sofa watching television, and when she heard that Yu Ling had been hurt by a scumbag, she had been furious.

There was no other reason. His wife had once been hurt by a scumbag too, and had even lost faith in love for a time. It was only after meeting him that she had learned to believe in love again.

Zhang Feng deliberately called out, “Hey, miss, don’t try to frame me. I’m only here to inspect the house. I haven’t even laid a finger on you.”

With that, Zhang Feng quickly moved aside.

He straightened his back, held his head high, and strode away.

Hmph. Don’t even think about touching me, you wicked woman. Can you keep up with me?

The police arrived quickly. Their expressions were solemn as they surveyed the scene before asking, “Who called the police?”

Zhang Feng hurriedly raised his hand. “I… I did.”

Good heavens. This was the first time in his life he had ever spoken to the police. It felt just like being called on by a teacher in elementary school to answer a question in front of the whole class. He was inexplicably nervous.

He then recounted everything that had happened.

“I’m a real-estate agent commissioned by the owner of this house. I came here to inspect the property today, but the moment I entered, I saw this gentleman beating that woman.” Zhang Feng pointed first at Mu Chenbei, then at Lin Mianmian.

When he finished, he wiped at the nonexistent sweat on his forehead.

The police cast a sharp look at Mu Chenbei and Lin Mianmian, who lay on the floor barely alive.

“Take them all in. We’ll record their statements at the station.”

Zhang Feng and his colleagues secretly lamented their bad luck. They had only come to inspect a house, yet somehow they were ending up at the police station for questioning.

What rotten luck.

When they arrived at the station, Zhou Jingyi happened to be there during the registration process.

He was drinking tea absentmindedly while listening to one of his subordinates gossip.

“There was a violent assault at Springview Garden. A man and a woman were involved, and the woman is apparently a celebrity. I heard the man was originally another female celebrity’s boyfriend, but he couldn’t stand being lonely and cheated on her with this actress. Someone caught them in bed during a livestream, and it’s still trending online.”

At that, Zhou Jingyi set down his teacup and asked, “Do you know their names?”

The subordinate looked at him in surprise. “Captain Zhou, since when have you been interested in gossip?”

Zhou Jingyi shot him a warning glance. “Stop talking nonsense and tell me.”

The subordinate realized he had asked too much and hurriedly smacked himself twice on the mouth.

That was for asking too many questions!

“The woman’s name is Lin Mianmian. I don’t know the man’s name, but I heard his surname is Mu.”

So it really was those two.

Even Zhou Jingyi, who had witnessed countless dramatic situations, could not help sighing. The world was truly a small place.

He had been about to go looking for them, and now they had delivered themselves right to his door.

Picking up a notebook at random, he rose and walked out.

The subordinate, still rooted to the spot, hurriedly called after him. “Captain Zhou, where are you going?”

“To meet our two newest companions.”

The subordinate scratched his head. Why did Captain Zhou’s voice sound so chilling? It was almost as if someone had offended him.

Watching Zhou Jingyi disappear into the distance, he shook his head and hurried after him.

Never mind. He had better stick close to Captain Zhou for now.

.

Elsewhere—

A man stood before an enormous floor-to-ceiling window. His tall, broad frame was wrapped in a black suit, his waist trim and powerful. Yet his back looked unbearably lonely, radiating an intense sense of solitude.

Outside, skyscrapers rose in dense ranks. One after another, the towers reflected the sunlight in cold, silvery flashes.

Someone knocked on the office door from outside. The man parted his lips, and his voice was as cold as ice in the depths of winter.

He uttered a single word, grudgingly:

“Come in.”

The secretary entered, calm and composed, as though this sort of situation were nothing unusual.

“President Gu, the hospital just called. Miss Zhu is showing signs that she may be waking up.”

The form of address made the man’s identity immediately clear.

Gu Tingchuan’s body trembled. He slowly turned around, moving with the sluggishness of an old man.

His usually cold and solemn face now held unmistakable astonishment—and a barely concealed, overwhelming joy.
