Unexpectedly, Shen Ting shot Xiang Jie a glare and said coldly, "If you have a problem with the director, then please say it to her face."

Xiang Jie was instantly silenced, her expression forlorn.

She couldn't understand it—since Shen Ting had returned this time, she seemed different. In the past, Shen Ting was always the one leading the charge against Ruan Mianmian, but now she didn't even dare utter a single mocking word.

Xiang Jie finally understood: with Ruan Mianmian as director, even the usually arrogant Shen Ting no longer dared to provoke her.

Xiang Jie returned to her workstation, keeping silent.

Ruan Mianmian didn’t give it much thought and took Wu Ketian out for lunch.

Though Hanhai Group had its own staff cafeteria, since it was Wu Ketian's first day, Ruan Mianmian felt it should be a bit more formal and took her to a popular Japanese restaurant nearby.

The leisurely lunch left Ruan Mianmian in much better spirits.

When she returned to the office, she found an extra folder on her desk.

"What’s this?"

She picked up the folder for a glance and found it was a contract—specifically, a transfer of shares contract for her remaining holdings in Hanhai Group.

"What on earth is Jian Yanzhi up to now!" she muttered, grabbing the folder and storming off to find him.

She tossed the file onto his desk and demanded, "What’s this about?"

Jian Yanzhi didn’t even look up, replying coldly, "Haven’t we already discussed this? Weren’t you planning to transfer your shares?"

Ruan Mianmian had indeed considered it before, but now that everything was fine, she had changed her mind. After all, the dividends each year were significant—she wasn’t foolish.

Crossing her arms, she said, "I don’t want to transfer my shares anymore. Here, take the contract back."

With that, she turned to leave, but unexpectedly, Jian Yanzhi called out to stop her, his voice cold.

"Ruan Mianmian!"

There was nothing friendly in his tone; in fact, there was a hint of anger.

She looked back, her own expression losing all patience.

"What do you want?"

Jian Yanzhi licked his lips, a trace of impatience in his eyes that she couldn’t quite fathom. He let out a sigh, as if struggling to rein in his temper, then asked in a gentler tone:

"What happened? Why did you change your mind about the transfer?"

He kept his head lowered, a quiet hopefulness hidden in his gaze.

But Ruan Mianmian replied bluntly, "I’m not stupid. Back then, I wanted to sell because I needed money for an emergency. Now the problem is solved, so of course I won’t sell my shares."

Jian Yanzhi fell silent, his expression unreadable.

"Who is he?"

"What?"

He had asked a question out of the blue, leaving her puzzled.

"I asked who the man was that stayed over at your place last night," he repeated, his eyes cold with a mocking smile.

Ruan Mianmian wrinkled her nose, not understanding how he could possibly know about this.

Instead of answering, she asked, "How did you find out?"

"Does it matter how I found out?" he retorted, jaw clenched, visibly agitated.

She raised an eyebrow. "That’s my business. I don’t owe you any explanation, do I?"

Jian Yanzhi fell silent again.

Ruan Mianmian couldn’t figure out what he was so upset about. Even if he knew, what difference would it make? She couldn’t care less. Besides, what right did Jian Yanzhi have to question her?

Just then, his assistant, Duan Lingyue, burst in, looking flustered.

"General Manager, outside..."

She stopped abruptly when she saw Ruan Mianmian in the office.

Jian Yanzhi, his face still cold, looked at Duan Lingyue and asked, "What is it?"

She adjusted her glasses, clearly uneasy. "Miss Song is here. I told her you were in a meeting, but she wouldn’t listen—she insists on coming in to see you."

Ruan Mianmian raised her brows—it was Song Chenxi.

But she found it odd. What had happened between Jian Yanzhi and Song Chenxi that he now used the excuse of a meeting to avoid her?

Ruan Mianmian couldn’t figure it out, nor did she care to.

"I’ll be going, then. You two can talk," she said, turning to leave Jian Yanzhi’s office.

Jian Yanzhi stared after her decisive retreat, so angry that his knuckles turned white.

Duan Lingyue, unsure what to do, asked nervously, "General Manager, what should I do?"

"Let her wait for me in the lounge," he replied curtly.

"Alright, I’ll arrange it now."

Relieved, Duan Lingyue hurried out. Before long, Jian Yanzhi followed as well.

When Ruan Mianmian returned to her own office, she found Wu Ketian waiting anxiously inside.

"What’s wrong?" she asked.

Wu Ketian looked embarrassed and apologetic. "Director, I’m very sorry, but I need to go to the hospital right away!"

The hospital?

Ruan Mianmian remembered that in the novel, Wu Ketian had a younger brother who had been in a car accident and had lain in a coma ever since, always hospitalized.

Knowing Wu Ketian’s troubles, she didn’t press for details.

"It’s fine. I actually need to pick up some medicine from the hospital myself. You can ride with me."

Wu Ketian was taken aback, then her eyes filled with gratitude. She thanked Ruan Mianmian repeatedly.

"Thank you, Director."

"You’re welcome."

Ruan Mianmian picked up her handbag and left the office with Wu Ketian.

Her car was conveniently parked in Hanhai’s underground garage, making it easy to head out.

"Which hospital?"

"Huakang Neurology Hospital."

Wu Ketian gave her the address, and Ruan Mianmian drove her there.

Soon, they arrived at the hospital, and Wu Ketian went straight to her brother’s ward.

Wu Ketian’s brother was named Wu Kejing, a young man just past twenty, handsome and gentle in appearance, but now he could only lie silently in bed—motionless and painfully thin.

"Doctor Fan, is my brother alright?"

Fan Xu’s expression was grave, though there was a hint of joy in his eyes.

Ruan Mianmian’s heart skipped a beat. She remembered that Wu Ketian’s brother would eventually wake up, but judging by the current timeline, that part of the story hadn’t arrived yet.

Doctor Fan looked at Wu Ketian and said gently, "Don’t worry, your brother’s condition has slightly improved. I called you here today especially to share this good news."

Wu Ketian covered her mouth, tears brimming in her eyes.

"Doctor Fan, is that true? If Kejing’s condition is improving, does that mean there’s hope for him to wake up?"

Fan Xu nodded slightly. "The chances are slim, but it’s worth a try."

"But..."

He hesitated.

Wu Ketian wiped her tears and asked, "But what, Doctor Fan? Please tell me whatever it is."
