Chapter 68: The Rescue
Li Sanniang's scream was piercing, as chilling as that of a vengeful spirit. Chu Yun and Yang Liu’er were both startled, their hearts pounding. Without hesitation, they rushed toward the back courtyard to see what could have caused Li Sanniang such distress.
Upon arriving, they saw Chen Jun hanging from the jujube tree. Li Sanniang lay unconscious on the ground.
“Ah! Ah…” Yang Liu’er, unable to contain herself, let out a sharp scream as well.
Chu Yun, however, remained calm. He drew his bronze dagger and dashed toward the jujube tree. With a leap, he sliced horizontally, severing the rope from which Chen Jun was suspended. Using his remarkable agility, Chu Yun caught Chen Jun before he could crash to the ground.
Back on solid earth, Chu Yun quickly laid Chen Jun flat, checked his pulse and breath.
“Fortunately, his pulse is still there, and he’s breathing.”
Chu Yun breathed a sigh of relief. He examined Chen Jun’s head and reached to feel his cervical vertebrae.
“No signs of cerebral edema, no fracture in the cervical spine. We found him in time—he can be saved, he can definitely be saved!”
With this further assessment, Chu Yun felt reassured.
Meanwhile, the sound of Li Sanniang’s scream had drawn curious neighbors. They hurried over to see what was happening. The backyard of the Chen family was enclosed by a simple fence, so they could see everything clearly.
“Why is Chen Jun lying on the ground?”
“And Li Sanniang too—why is she on the ground?”
“Look closely, Chen Jun’s neck is red, and there’s half a rope hanging from the jujube tree. It’s obvious he tried to hang himself. Li Sanniang must’ve fainted from shock.”
“Ah, how did it come to this?”
“I heard Chen Jun wanted to be with Wang Shuangxi from Jubilant Restaurant, but she dismissed him, saying he was a toad lusting after a swan. Wang Shuangxi actually likes Lord Cheng, who was assigned to Wu’s Apothecary by the Witch Doctor Sect. Chen Jun must’ve been deeply hurt and couldn’t take it anymore.”
“This Wang Shuangxi is shameless. It was thanks to Chen Jun’s intelligence—the soy milk, tofu pudding, tofu, and the soft yeast cakes—that Jubilant Restaurant was revived and started prospering, yet she looks down on him.”
“That’s right. If Chen Jun hadn’t turned their restaurant’s business around, Lord Cheng from the Witch Doctor Sect wouldn’t have even noticed her.”
“Hush, keep your voice down. Wang Shuangxi is already betrothed to Lord Cheng. If anyone hears…”
The neighbors realized Chen Jun had attempted suicide out of despair and couldn’t help but sigh in sympathy.
The Witch Doctor Sect again? Chu Yun’s brow furrowed slightly.
Though Wang Shuangxi had always looked down on Chen Jun, and even without the Witch Doctor Sect, she wouldn’t have chosen him, Chu Yun still felt a growing resentment toward the sect.
But he did not dwell on it. Saving Chen Jun was the priority.
Though they’d caught him in time and Chen Jun had a good chance of survival, he could still die if not rescued properly.
Chu Yun urgently called out to Yang Liu’er, “Liu’er, come help me!”
“Oh, alright.” Yang Liu’er responded instinctively and hurried to Chu Yun’s side.
Chu Yun demonstrated with his hands, explaining, “Liu’er, do as I do. Gently massage Chen Jun’s neck, then all the way up to his head, and softly rub his scalp.”
This was mainly to ensure Chen Jun’s blood flowed smoothly, preventing blockage and brain hypoxia.
In truth, since Chen Jun still had breath and a heartbeat, his cervical spine was intact, and there was no cerebral swelling, vascular blockage was unlikely. Yet Chu Yun was cautious.
After all, he was about to perform artificial respiration, and if Chen Jun’s breathing resumed but his circulation was poor, complications like brain hemorrhage could occur.
Both hanging and drowning are difficult suicide methods to rescue—though not as direct as jumping from a height, they are often hard to recover from, especially in this technologically backward world.
“Yes, yes!” Yang Liu’er replied eagerly. She added, “My husband, the immortal gave you medical skills—does this mean you can save Chen Jun?”
Chu Yun nodded. “Just follow my instructions.”
“Alright, husband, you must save Chen Jun. He’s so young—he can’t die like this!”
Yang Liu’er massaged Chen Jun’s neck as she pleaded earnestly with Chu Yun.
“Don’t worry, I can bring him back!” Chu Yun smiled at Yang Liu’er, then immediately began performing artificial respiration on Chen Jun.
The crowd watched, fascinated, and began to whisper among themselves.
“What are they doing?”
“It looks like they’re trying to revive Chen Jun!”
“But can they really save him? My third aunt’s second uncle’s son’s wife’s grandmother’s grandniece once pretended to hang herself out of spite. She was rescued quickly, still breathing and moving, but ended up dying anyway. Chen Jun isn’t moving at all—most likely, he won’t make it.”
“Exactly. A few years ago, Huang Erwa’s wife hanged herself after an argument over two knife coins. She was rescued in time, but didn’t survive.”
“Hanging is rarely survivable. Chen Jun is so young, not even married yet—such a shame!”
“Not necessarily. Chu Yun’s medical skills were learned from an immortal in his dreams. Didn’t he cure Lord Jiang and Lord Luo’s illnesses?”
“He won’t succeed—definitely not. Haven’t you heard the Witch Doctor Sect say Chu Yun is a fraud, that he killed someone in the capital?”
“Killed someone? That’s not right. He rode back in style, dressed in fine clothes. If he’d killed someone in the capital, would he return so grandly?”
“We’ll see. If Chu Yun can save Chen Jun, his medical skills must be extraordinary…”
After their discussion, everyone stared at Chu Yun with anticipation.
Though the Witch Doctor Sect had stationed a medical official in Chu Family Town, the fees were exorbitant, and ordinary people couldn’t afford treatment.
They still hoped Chu Yun, a native of Chu Family Town, truly possessed remarkable medical skills, so they could receive decent care.
