Chapter 103: Demanding Accountability
A sharp eagle’s cry pierced the sky, halting the clouds and drawing the attention of many students. A colossal eagle, with a wingspan of ten meters, slowly landed atop the roof of a dormitory building in Academy District One. From the roof, a young student descended.
With a sudden boom, the giant bird vanished, transforming into a streak of light that merged seamlessly into the back of his left hand.
“Mr. Charles, please come with us,” a voice called up as soon as he steadied himself.
“All right, please wait a moment,” Charles replied calmly, unhurried. He stepped inside, took a quick shower, and changed into clean clothes.
“Charles, do you know why they came for you?” Irene asked with obvious concern, sensing hostility in the visitors outside.
“It’s nothing serious, just a few questions. I’ll be back soon,” he smiled reassuringly, tidied his appearance, and stepped out of the small villa.
The visitor was a bald man from his squad, a towering figure as robust as a grizzly bear, with arms thicker than Charles’s waist.
The man grinned broadly and said, “Bloody White Fox, you’re done for!”
“Oh, so this is why you came—to reclaim a shred of your pitiful pride by leading me somewhere?” Charles said, his expression calm as he slightly raised his chin to look at him.
Though Charles was significantly shorter, the bald man, Iron Tower, felt an instinctive fear. The man before him was far more formidable than he had expected.
Especially in recent days, Charles had been completing missions solo, leaving no survivors each time, which only deepened Iron Tower’s apprehension.
The scars on Iron Tower’s face trembled like centipedes as he sneered, “I’m telling you, Clark, Bean, and Stuart are all present this time. You’re finished!”
“Oh? And what of it?” Charles ignored him.
“Fine, we’ll see about that!” Iron Tower said no more, striding ahead without a hint of guiding him.
After a while, Iron Tower glanced back in frustration. To his rising anger, Charles was calmly standing atop a giant turtle’s shell, engrossed in a book as if on a leisurely trip.
Iron Tower snapped coldly, “Totems are not allowed to be summoned arbitrarily within the Academy.”
“Oh, if you check page twelve of the Academy regulations, you’ll see that summoning totems to threaten others is forbidden, and violators will face the Enforcement Squad’s investigation,” Charles replied without looking up.
“Well said!” Iron Tower was left speechless. Charles clearly had the regulations memorized and could not be easily coerced.
In terms of strength, Iron Tower was outmatched and could only brood silently.
After a moment, they arrived at the Enforcement Squad headquarters. Charles quietly followed as Iron Tower ascended to the third floor.
The building’s first floor housed the reception and intelligence departments; the second floor contained the various squad offices; the third floor was the meeting hall where all squads convened for major matters.
Today marked Charles’s first time on the third floor. He pushed open the door and entered a vast hall spanning hundreds of square meters.
To his surprise, it resembled the meeting rooms of companies in his previous life: a long oval table at the center, surrounded by chairs, with more seating along the walls.
Only squad leaders were allowed to sit at the table; the rest had to listen quietly from the side.
Despite the room’s capacity for over a hundred, only a dozen or so were present.
All four members of squad 007 were there. At the head of the table sat three men exuding a fierce aura. The central figure spoke, “Enforcer White Fox, do you plead guilty?”
“What crime have I committed?” Charles asked with steady composure.
The man’s voice carried an inexplicable tremor and a lofty, transcendent authority that made Charles almost want to kneel in reverence.
Clearly, this was Clark, the man rumored to possess terrifying psychic powers.
“Many wanted criminals did not deserve death, but why do you insist on killing them? Can you honestly say it wasn’t intentional?”
Despite the mounting psychic pressure, Charles remained calm. “I’m sorry, if it could be resolved peacefully, they wouldn’t have died. If you consider killing someone who threatened tens of thousands of students here a sin, then I have nothing to say. Punish me as you see fit.”
“Tony only injured someone. Why did you storm into the tavern, risking dozens of innocent lives, just to kill him?”
The man’s expression grew angrier, and the psychic force pressing on Charles’s back felt like a heavy mountain.
Still, Charles stood firm, meeting the gaze without retreat. “Ha, does Tony have some special connection to you? Otherwise, why would you be so enraged?”
“You’re courting death!” the man suddenly rose, a pair of vast, shadowy wings materializing behind him, radiating a savage, terrifying aura.
Yet a man beside him smiled and stood up, holding out his hand to stop him. “Mr. Clark, don’t forget this is the Academy. Everything must be proven with evidence.”
“Then this is my evidence.” Charles took a small crystal from his pocket, infused it with a trace of source energy, and placed it on the table.
A faint hum sounded.
The crystal trembled lightly before projecting a one-meter square holographic screen, playing like a film.
At the screen’s center was a shirtless man lounging boldly in the middle of a large bed, flanked by two beautiful girls.
The two girls appeared no older than sixteen or seventeen, dressed in alluring fashion with heavy makeup, revealing smooth, pale skin.
“Mr. Tony, I am Enforcer White Fox. Regarding your serious assault on Academy freshman Cody, please come with me,” Charles said solemnly, producing a restraining bracelet. “Put on the restraint cuff.”
“Heh, who do you think you are? Do you even know who I am?” Tony sneered arrogantly.
“Sorry, I represent the Enforcement Squad, guardians of this Academy’s order. No one is exempt from obedience,” Charles stated calmly, reciting the Squad’s decree.
“You really think you’re somebody! Let me tell you, even your boss wouldn’t dare arrest me. Think carefully—why didn’t the others come after me, but sent you instead? You’re an idiot!”
Tony shook his head in mock pity, standing to point at Charles’s nose. “Before you came, someone already told me. You really think a tiny Enforcement Squad can threaten the heir of the Clemens family?”
“Are you stupid?” Charles asked quietly.
“Sorry, I represent the Enforcement Squad, the embodiment of justice and order in this Academy…”
“Get lost! Now I see it clearly—you’re all a bunch of idiots!” Tony yelled, slapping his hand down hard.
The image abruptly cut off.
