Weiwei nodded slightly. Anya felt she had to remind Yang Changfeng that no matter how hard he worked, he was still just a pawn in his boss’s hands, someone who could be discarded at any moment.

Perhaps it was time for her to leave as well. All her previous insights had come from an abnormal company environment. From now on, Chen Aijia was the boss; both she and he were merely employees, and they needed to understand their roles.

She believed she had already been more than fair to Yang, but Chen Aijia was still not pleased. If not for the sake of the bigger picture, she wouldn’t have bothered with something as trivial as a car race. After all these years, a long-awaited date was far more precious.

Seeing that Anya said nothing more and simply turned to leave, Chen Aijia felt uncomfortable. She was making decisions on her own again—was she really entitled to take matters into her own hands when it came to important company affairs?

She resolved to find an opportunity soon to send Anya to the grassroots level for some hands-on work; it would be good for her. With this thought, Chen Aijia nodded slightly, feeling, for the first time, truly in control and able to overlook the entire situation from on high.

But she didn’t get the chance to reassign Anya. Within minutes, Anya’s resignation letter landed on her desk.

Anya was a quiet girl, but her character was extremely stubborn and her decisions always swift and resolute. Once she made up her mind, she acted immediately. The company no longer needed her to be the boss’s ever-present assistant, so she would leave.

What truly prompted Anya’s rapid decision was Vice President Su.

When Anya left the office, her lips were tightly pressed together, her face pale, and her expression resolute. She happened to bump into Vice President Su, who was approaching, all smiles, to see Chen Aijia. At the sight of Anya, Su thought she must have argued with Chen Aijia.

Su’s expression darkened as she quietly reproached her, “Secretary An, I must remind you that this is a company, not your home, nor is it like before. You should be mindful of proper behavior and not overstep boundaries.”

Indeed, boundaries should not be crossed. The sisterly feelings of the past should end here. From now on, she was the boss, and Anya would go live her own life. The boss needed a loyal assistant during tough times, not a companion lingering at her side during her moments of triumph.

The world was vast, and life could still be lived splendidly.

She wrote her resignation letter and immediately handed it to Chen Aijia.

Chen Aijia was laughing and chatting with Vice President Su when Anya knocked and entered. Su frowned again.

This secretary really doesn’t understand proper conduct; she needs to be replaced.

Calm and composed, Anya handed the letter to Chen Aijia and said quietly, “Thank you, President Chen, for your care during this time. I am no longer capable of fulfilling the duties of secretary and hereby request your approval to resign.”

Chen Aijia was stunned, quickly pushing the letter back. “Xiaoya, what are you doing? Is it something I did wrong? Why would you want to leave?”

Vice President Su, annoyed, said in a measured tone, “Secretary An, if you have a problem with something I said, you can bring it up directly. There’s no need to use resignation to threaten the boss.”

Casting a cold glance at Su, Anya replied coolly, “There’s no other reason. I just can’t do this job anymore. I’m tired. I think it’s time I found a normal work environment. President Chen, take care. I’m leaving now.”

Not a threat?

Vice President Su was at a loss. She couldn’t understand it. The boss was about to take control; as a secretary, Anya was even more well-regarded than herself, the vice president. Why leave now? Was this girl out of her mind?

Chen Aijia panicked. Her intuition told her Anya was upset with her, but what had she done wrong?

At that moment, Yang Changfeng burst in without knocking, only to be rebuked by Vice President Su, “Captain Yang, don’t you know the rules?”

Yang Changfeng was taken aback—what was going on?

Su continued sternly, “What company lets employees see the boss this freely? Hasn’t anyone taught you the courtesy of knocking?”

She meant well, afraid that another troublemaker like Wang Hu might emerge. Yang was strong-willed and domineering, and could easily become a disaster like Wang Hu, so he needed to be kept in check from the very start.

But Yang Changfeng hadn’t considered any of that and scratched his head, joking, “Is that really necessary? Doesn’t this just show I’ve got connections?”

Before he finished, Su snapped, slamming the desk and pointing at the door, “President Chen may value you, but that’s no excuse for rudeness. Get out and knock before coming in.”

“Isn’t this a bit much?” Yang Changfeng raised his brows, his smile turning cold. He glanced at Chen Aijia and said coolly, “I didn’t beg for this job, nor am I here to profit from your company. Who are you trying to impress?”

Chen Aijia was already in a bad mood, completely at a loss from Anya’s resignation. She couldn’t fathom why Anya would leave at a time like this. Had Su said something to her?

“Fine. Call me before you come in next time,” Chen Aijia snapped, directing her anger at Yang Changfeng.

Normally, Yang would have agreed readily, seeing that Chen Aijia was upset. But under these circumstances, he could only interpret her words as siding with Vice President Su.

Rules?

To hell with your rules.

Yang Changfeng flung out his hand, as if to say, “Do as you please. I’m done here.” Spotting the resignation letter on the desk, he picked it up and shot a look at Anya. What was going on? Why was she resigning all of a sudden?

“Did someone wrong you?” Yang Changfeng raised his brows, slammed the letter down, and took Anya by the hand. “Let’s go. To hell with their rules—we’re done here. Who needs this?”

He had just been handed the perfect opportunity to take down Wang Hu, but now they were being shown the door. Did they really think he was begging for a meal?

Chen Aijia was frantic. “What are you doing?”

“I’m out—do as you please. Damn it, who are you to lay down rules? If you’re so capable, do it yourself.” With that, Yang called Sun Zhaoxing. “Hey, you don’t need to look out for this lousy company on my account anymore. If you owe me anything, settle it with me directly. Damn it, I can’t keep up with these rich folks. I’m going solo from now on—send a car to pick me up. Once I finish your job, I’ll find something else.”

Anya gave Chen Aijia a final look, saying nothing more. There was nothing left to say. Did they really think Yang Changfeng was so easily manipulated?

Wang Hu wasn’t even out of the picture yet, and they were already talking about setting rules and casting aside the loyal. President Chen, you play your own games.

Vice President Su was dumbfounded. What had just happened?

Yang Changfeng left with Anya, the office door slamming behind them, as if announcing something irrevocable. Chen Aijia suddenly shivered.

Why?

What had happened to them?

Could it be that they somehow knew about the text message she had received?
