“I personally ate her, bite by bite. Yes, she must have been someone I loved deeply! I am absolutely certain of it, because while I was consuming her, my heart kept stabbing with pain, reminding me that she was the woman I loved most.”

Wang Jinkai spoke with a tender expression. As he recounted the story, he gradually entered a state of intoxication, happiness almost spilling from him. From his sincere gaze, Tanya could tell that he truly had loved the woman he referred to as “her.”

Tanya felt she was about to die from the sweetness. It was unbearably saccharine, making her yearn even more for a flawless, perfect love. She smiled helplessly, interpreting Chu Ning’s cold sneer beside her as the powerless counterattack of a perpetually single man.

“Hey, stop imagining things, will you? Don’t make yourself sound so lecherous. You’re making it far too easy for people to misunderstand you.” Chu Ning rolled his eyes speechlessly. The moment he saw Tanya winking at him, he realized she had taken him the wrong way.

Perhaps her mind was simply filthy enough to steer anything toward lust and sex. One had to admit that, in certain social situations, it was a strangely popular talent.

“What do you mean, I’m imagining things? Wang Jinkai was obviously talking about something sexual—he practically spelled out the whole process!” Tanya retorted, her face flushed with embarrassment as she pointed her slender finger at Chu Ning.

Chu Ning felt that he and Tanya might not even be operating on the same wavelength. He knew exactly what she had misunderstood, but he could swear that his own first reaction had not been lewd at all. He had merely taken Wang Jinkai’s words at face value.

“You ate the woman who stirred your desire—the very target of our mission. The person who escaped from the laboratory. Am I right?”

Chu Ning pressed him relentlessly, staring at Wang Jinkai in astonishment. This was something he had never expected.

“That’s right. I really did eat her raw!” Wang Jinkai sobbed, tears streaming down his face. He wiped away the tears at the corners of his eyes, his expression filled with grief. Even now, he still had not accepted her death. Whenever he mentioned her, sorrow rose anew within him.

“You ate her raw? You ate her?”

Tanya stared at Wang Jinkai in utter shock, pointing at him. She could not begin to imagine what it would be like to eat a person alive. She had to admit that Chu Ning had been right—her thoughts really had wandered somewhere strange.

Before she had time to feel ashamed, Tanya heard this horrifying revelation, and her embarrassment was temporarily forgotten. She widened her eyes at the neither-human-nor-ghost Wang Jinkai, then silently shook her head.

Chu Ning had successfully grasped the crux of the matter. What concerned him most was the matter of the reward. It had become an obsession of his. If he failed to fulfill the wish that had once driven him, then the merging of his personalities would be an arduous and perilous road.

Once all the wishes had been fulfilled, the lingering obsessions within the body would disperse completely, which would also facilitate the merging of the personalities. It was much like the saying that people become kind in their final moments. So long as a dying person’s last request was not too excessive, others would do their best to fulfill it.

“This is complete nonsense. Heh!” Chu Ning was so angry that he nearly walked away and refused to continue. He truly wanted to file a complaint against the program Terror Game. It had actually engaged in false advertising.

If the target had already died, why had they been summoned here at all? Was this not completely pointless?

He had originally come under the banner of helping his brother look after his sister-in-law. He could not simply stand by and watch a lone woman left without support. That would have been far too heartless.

The reason Chu Ning had given was indeed flawless, but now the target had unexpectedly died. What kind of absurd situation was this?

He sighed in disappointment. Perhaps this was simply fate.

Wang Jinkai had transformed into another form of life, while the target had left behind not even the slightest trace. To Chu Ning, this was nothing but the cruelty of fate.

“Yes, all of this was my fault! I should never have taken it upon myself to alter the materials and structure of the formation. That was what led to this tragedy.” Wang Jinkai openly admitted his mistake, recounting the past through anguished sobs.

Tanya felt no sympathy for Wang Jinkai’s remorse. What he had done had truly crossed the limits of what she could tolerate. Such a thing was almost unimaginable in a peaceful era. She had never heard of anything like it before.

Though Tanya had never heard of such things, they had genuinely occurred in the world around her. She simply had not known about them.

Wang Jinkai gazed at them pleadingly, hoping to receive some comfort. Yet the two people across from him found it difficult to utter anything consoling.

“Could you explain how you altered the formation and its materials without permission? The more detail, the better.” Chu Ning asked with considerable interest. He was genuinely fascinated by the so-called conversion of life.

Based on the materials left behind on the floor of Wang Jinkai’s villa, Chu Ning discovered that this was not the method he had once taught Wang Jinkai. Even though his former self had not yet vanished, and the current Chu Ning had not usurped his place, the ritual for converting life surfaced again and again from the deepest recesses of his memories.

After crossing into this world, one of Chu Ning’s personalities had therefore continued researching the same subject: how to transform a ghost into a human. It was a serious topic, despite sounding utterly inconceivable.

His experiment could be considered a failure. After all, Chu Ning had still not become human again. His one distinctive achievement, however, was that he had obtained a body of his own.

It was a body that fit his soul perfectly, created only after he had consumed an incalculable quantity of materials. Chu Ning discovered that whenever he occupied someone else’s body, an inexplicable rejection reaction would always occur. The body might function for several days, but it would eventually collapse and rot.

“Perhaps this is why, in cultivation novels, soul seizure can never be performed a second time. Heh!”

When science could no longer explain his condition, Chu Ning began using theology instead. This was also how many researchers first began to lose their sanity.

That was why the X-07 creatures surged toward Chu Ning like sharks that had smelled blood. As organisms that fed primarily on flesh, they naturally followed their instincts and sought out food.

And if one really wanted to compare them, the flesh of Chu Ning’s body happened to suit the swarm’s tastes particularly well. That was a fact Chu Ning had no choice but to acknowledge.

After crossing into this extraordinarily bizarre world, Chu Ning had used biotechnology to cultivate another body. It was imperfect, but it could barely serve as a place for him to reside.

As for searching among the human population for a suitable candidate, that method had clearly been rendered obsolete by the times. Such an inefficient approach was used only by a few old fossils.

As someone who believed in science, Chu Ning preferred to conduct repeated tests through rigorous methods.

The times had certainly changed. In this era, ghosts and monsters could not survive without mastering experimental technology. Humans in this world all knew how to implant various mechanical components into their bodies. In fact, they had modified themselves into beings even more monstrous than ghosts.
