The dim lights inside the abandoned chemical plant flickered weakly, offering a measure of illumination to those who had come here. For them, it was fortunate news, and even more advantageous for the pursuit of their target.

“Don’t you think that’s strange?” Tanya said, her gaze drifting uncertainly toward the lamps in the ruined roof. She had noticed that the lighting equipment here had been preserved far too well. In a place abandoned for so many years, fixtures like these should long ago have been worn down by time.

The interior of the plant merely suffered from unstable voltage, yet it still stubbornly provided light for them. Drawing on her own experience, Tanya knew how difficult it was even to repair a home’s wiring, let alone the complex electrical systems of a factory.

“There’s no way the target repaired all this alone!” Tanya was absolutely certain of it. Curious, she examined the surroundings, hoping to find proof that someone had been here.

Seeing the others who had entered the plant with him, Chu Ning tacitly searched in different directions, and did not pay it much mind. For a chemical plant, the place was far too complex, like a small maze.

“You’re not wrong. This place was certainly not transformed by the target’s own strength. It was only with the help of others that this environment was altered into what it is now.”

“If you look carefully enough, you can tell that the lighting fixtures are newer than the surrounding building, or vice versa. That may be the best proof!” Chu Ning said suddenly, as if he had realized something.

Tanya asked hesitantly, “Others?”

From the clues they had gathered, the target was indeed one person. There could not be any other faction helping her. Anyone would have to weigh the company’s power before deciding whether to aid the target.

“Yes. Everything was completed with the assistance of Nightmare Expedition Company. For them, that’s nothing unusual.”

Tanya knew that voice well. It was the executioner who had tried to kill them just moments ago. Excited, she stared toward the source, finally having caught this elusive rat in the act.

“Nightmare Expedition Company? You must be mistaken. How could something like that happen?” Tanya remained skeptical of what she had heard. If she remembered correctly, the release of information about the target had been the company’s doing.

As such, they should have been enemies. How could the company help its own foe? That was ridiculous beyond words. For sworn enemies to cooperate with each other? That was clearly a joke.

“I didn’t say anything wrong. It really was Nightmare Expedition Company that helped repair the plant’s facilities. The power system was also restored with the company’s backup supply, allowing the factory to regain its energy.”

Chu Ning fell silent for a long while before asking, “Why would they go to so much trouble? I remember that people at the bottom don’t need refined things, and no one cares whether they live or die.”

He truly could not fathom the company’s purpose. The company certainly had the ability to send in robots and wipe them out in one sweep. Chu Ning felt a chill as well; if they had not seized the position first, they would already have become someone else’s spoils.

From a dark corner in the distance, a figure emerged. Just as they were about to press for the information they needed and use their weapons to halt the slaughter, Chu Ning had already taken in the clues he had found. He stared without blinking at the shadow stepping out of the gloom. Knowing an attack would be useless, he would not waste time trying it again and again. He merely stood watchfully, fixed on the corner.

“Who’s there?” Chu Ning demanded sharply. He truly had not noticed anyone hiding nearby. If the other side had not spoken first, he would not have discovered the target even now.
