Chapter 127: An Awkward Escape
"I am truly sorry, but I really do not know how to reverse it. Or rather, from the very moment this formation was designed, a reversal was never even considered," Chu Ning said, his gaze dim. He lacked the tension one might expect when facing a formidable foe, even though the swarm did, in a sense, exert immense pressure upon them.
"You must be lying to me, right? Tell me the truth, and I will surely spare your lives! You have no idea how much I am suffering; the agony of the swarm churning within my body is beyond anything you can imagine." Wang Jinkai began to plead with Chu Ning, staring at him intently with bloodshot eyes.
Wang Jinkai lived every moment in soul-tearing torment. He could not hope for the swarm to collectively enter a dormant state; it was simply unrealistic. Especially when encountering prey, Wang Jinkai would grow irritable, his desire to kill becoming overwhelmingly intense.
Truth be told, Wang Jinkai was not a murderous person, but the slaughter was a matter of necessity. Quickly ending the lives before him could reduce the frequency of the swarm’s outbursts—a reason sufficient to alter his behavioral patterns.
Chu Ning said expressionlessly, "There is truly no way to reverse it. Researching such matters brings me no benefit. You should give up; no matter what your goal is, it can never be achieved!"
Chu Ning vaguely understood what Wang Jinkai sought. He had seen such things occur several times before and had gradually come to grasp the emotions behind them. It was quite simple to explain: it was nothing more than a desperate search for a regret-remedy to undo one’s own mistakes.
"You must be lying, you must be lying! You liars!" Wang Jinkai stumbled back a few steps, pointing a trembling finger at Chu Ning while muttering incoherently.
"Let’s go. There is no value left in staying here," Chu Ning said coldly. As for the swarm circling them, he ignored it naturally; there was no need to pay any heed to a defeated opponent.
According to Chu Ning’s theory, if one could overcome a difficulty once, that same problem would never trouble him again. This was the source of his confidence. Blind confidence might be worthy of criticism, but it was still better than revealing one’s vulnerability before others!
Tanya looked at Chu Ning in confusion. This did not sound like something he would say. She clearly remembered how Chu Ning had participated in dangerous events for the sake of so-called high bonuses, and with such a relentless attitude, no less.
"Are you serious?"
Hearing Tanya refute his point, Chu Ning rolled his eyes in annoyance. At a time like this, she was still thinking about the bonus; she really didn't know what was important.
More importantly, they already knew this was a scam, so there was no reason to remain. Chu Ning had never doubted the methods capitalists used to squeeze out costs, regardless of the species involved. Even a sinister existence that embodied fear had its remaining value squeezed dry!
"If I haven't misunderstood, Wang Jinkai has consumed the target, so we can simply hand him over to the company; that should count as completing the mission."
"The promotional poster didn't specify the method of delivery, so I think this way is also valid and feasible! If something isn't forbidden, it’s tacitly allowed—isn't that how people generally operate?"
"Are you really going to give up enough money to last a lifetime? Was everything we did in vain? Pull yourself together and capture Wang Jinkai; success is right before our eyes."
Tanya waved her fists excitedly, cheering Chu Ning on!
"Talk about a born capitalist!"
Chu Ning sighed sincerely. He truly hadn't considered that angle. The underhanded tactic Tanya proposed certainly had its merits, but Chu Ning didn't want to continue entangling himself with Wang Jinkai. He felt an awkward sensation whenever he faced him; or rather, Chu Ning didn't want to inherit the interpersonal relationships left behind by his predecessor, as it would only lead to trouble!
Should he kill them to silence them, or just kill them to silence them?
"Ahhh... Since you don't know, then all of you just go and die!" Wang Jinkai clutched his head, his face twisted in pain. A mass of tentacles composed of X-07 erupted from his body, flailing wildly in the air.
Tanya could clearly see the churning, twisting X-07s, densely packed together and struggling as they surged toward them.
"You were right; we should leave quickly!" Tanya couldn't help but suggest. She always felt that tentacle monsters and young girls had an innate relationship of mutual restraint. Thinking about what might happen if she failed, Tanya couldn't help but shiver—it was simply too inhumane!
"Alright!" Chu Ning readily agreed to Tanya’s request; he knew his choice was not wrong. He looked helplessly at the surrounding swarm, preparing to find a point to break through.
"Roar!"
Wang Jinkai lost his sanity and rushed toward them, reaching out with countless tentacles toward Chu Ning. If an ordinary person saw this scene, their sanity would likely plummet in an instant. At this moment, Wang Jinkai’s image was infinitely close to that of a legendary evil god; the only difference was that he still maintained a complete human form!
"Let's go!" Seeing that things had taken a turn for the worse, Chu Ning placed his hand on Tanya’s shoulder, his tone appearing very calm. After all, he possessed the divine escape skills of teleportation and flight; under normal circumstances, he could not be contained. Even as he prepared to take Tanya with him, how much did a soul weigh?
Tanya instantly understood what Chu Ning meant. This was the moment for her to play her important role—clinging to the thigh of a powerhouse! She grabbed his sleeve tightly, ready to experience the feeling of being carried to safety.
A long time passed, yet they remained in the same spot. Tanya gave Chu Ning a strange look, and the meaning behind it was clear enough to be read in her eyes: Why aren't we leaving yet? Wang Jinkai was lunging toward them like a mad dog, tracking their scent! Facing the threat of a tentacle monster, it was extremely difficult for Tanya to keep her composure; judging by the direction of Wang Jinkai’s attack, she could infer that the creature might have developed some new, twisted preferences!
A chill ran through Tanya at the thought. She didn't know why her mind was wandering to such places—perhaps it was a new shift in her consciousness as she neared death.
Chu Ning turned his head stiffly and gave Tanya an awkward smile. "You're too heavy; we might need to change our combat strategy!"
"You bastard, how dare you say I'm heavy! I'm so angry I could die!" Hearing this, Tanya instantly unleashed infinite potential, and her power showed a clear fluctuation.
Silently enduring Tanya’s negligible blow, Chu Ning reflected on whether his own past wrongdoings had caused his abilities to malfunction...
That didn't make scientific sense!
