Chapter 103: The More She Thought About It, the More Frightened She Became

"Just call him Mr. Hong — don't mention his background. He prefers to keep a low profile."
Zhang Huaiyi hurried over and whispered urgently into Liang Jiajie's ear.
Liang Jiajie stiffened at once and bowed deeply. "Mr. Hong, what an honor. I am Liang Jiajie, the general director of this jewelry exhibition. Your presence today truly graces us beyond measure."
Chen Yingying snorted and said coldly, "Is this some kind of plant? 'Mr. Hong' — really. And even if you are a plant, was there any need to hit someone? Now that sales associate is injured — who's going to sell us our engagement ring?"
Wang Qi was also displeased.
Zhang Huaiyi had spoken so discreetly — as though he had merely wandered close to Liang Jiajie in passing — that Wang Qi had not yet turned around in time to catch the exchange.
Wang Qi looked Liang Jiajie up and down and laughed. "Ha. As far as I recall, the general director of this exhibition has the surname Li. If you're going to play a plant, at least do your research."
Liang Jiajie was at a loss as to where these two brash young people had come from. It was true, as Wang Qi said, that the previous general director had been surnamed Li — but that man had been called away recently by Liang Jiajie's uncle, Liang Zhanpeng, for a special assignment, leaving Liang Jiajie to take over the exhibition.
In Huaizhou, Liang Jiajie had never backed down before anyone. He glared and barked, "Who the hell do you two think you are? I'm speaking to Mr. Hong — who asked you to open your mouths?"
Chen Yingying drew breath to unleash a torrent of abuse, but Wang Qi noticed the sales associates standing near the display cases — especially the intern, who didn't dare go help the associate who had been kicked to the floor. From this, he understood that Liang Jiajie was, if not the general director of the entire exhibition, at minimum the head of this particular booth.
Putting together the surname Liang, Wang Qi asked with a slight headache, "What is your relation to Liang Jiajie?"
"The hell? You think you can just say my uncle's name like that, you piece of trash?" Liang Jiajie's fury flared.
Wang Qi felt a flash of awkwardness. He had not expected the man before him to be Liang Zhanpeng's nephew. The bravado he had carried moments ago deflated entirely.
Chen Yingying muttered resentfully, "What's there to be so proud of? Liang Zhanpeng has a son of his own. You're just a nephew — do you think you're inheriting the throne?"
"What did you just say?" Liang Jiajie's hearing was sharp.
Lin Shuyu saw that he had heard and quickly grabbed Chen Yingying's arm. "Yingying, apologize right now — don't make trouble for Uncle."
Chen Yingying realized she had gone too far and bowed hastily. "I'm sorry. I was wrong."
Liang Jiajie snarled, "What good is an apology? That's what police are for. You think you're something special, you little brat? Clearly, society hasn't taught you a proper lesson yet."
Then he wheeled around and pointed at Lin Shuyu. "And you — what are you cutting in for? When I'm speaking, who gave you the right to—"

"That is my wife."
Hong Yu's voice rose suddenly from directly behind Liang Jiajie.
Liang Jiajie froze, his eyes going wide as saucers.
Then, as though he had mastered the art of instant transformation, his face broke into a warm and genial smile.
"Oh! So this is my sister-in-law!"
"No wonder, no wonder Mr. Hong would come to a jewelry exhibition — of course, it's because sister-in-law is here as well!"
"Beautiful — truly, breathtakingly beautiful. Sister-in-law, simply by standing here, you illuminate the entire exhibition hall. I feel as though Huaizhou has, for the very first time, been graced with such radiant color."
"Forgive me — I am clumsy with words, without the refinement to do justice to sister-in-law's extraordinary beauty. I do hope she won't hold that against me."
Liang Jiajie's enthusiasm at that moment was positively explosive. Anyone who did not know better might have mistaken him for Hong Yu's own elder brother.
The sales associate who had been kicked to the floor wiped the blood from her face, staring in stunned disbelief.
She knew that with Liang Jiajie in this state, her job was almost certainly finished. What she feared most now was that he would seek revenge against her personally.
Thinking it through, she realized that no amount of pleading would move a cold man like Liang Jiajie to pity. So she scrambled to her feet and moved quickly to stand beside Lin Shuyu.
Liang Jiajie was tempted to kick her again, but when he saw her drop directly to her knees, he let out a cold snort. "What are you kneeling for? Have you finally grasped the enormity of the sin you've committed, you worthless creature?"
The associate nodded, squeezing out two teardrops.
Lin Shuyu, being a woman of gentle heart, moved instinctively to help her up.
Without her noticing, Hong Yu had appeared at her side and quietly caught her arm.
Hong Yu said with a cool smile, "Don't help her up, my love. If you do, you'll only be making things worse for her — understand?"
Lin Shuyu did not fully understand, but she chose to trust Hong Yu.
The associate gritted her teeth and said, "Sir, ma'am — today I was blind and showed contempt for people I should have respected. Please give me one chance. I swear I will conduct myself better and never repeat this kind of mistake."
Liang Jiajie sneered, "Then kowtow. A thousand times, and I'll let you go. Otherwise, I'll make your entire family pay."
The associate knew Liang Jiajie would not release her easily. For the sake of her family, without another thought, she began to knock her head against the floor.
Thud. Thud. Thud.

She kowtowed with full force, each strike ringing against the hard floor — yet Liang Jiajie remained unsatisfied with every single one.
Had he not been present today, he might never have known he had offended a man of Hong Yu's stature.
Zhang Huaiyi had not told Liang Jiajie Hong Yu's true identity, but Liang Jiajie was no fool. The moment he heard the surname Hong, he had a rough idea. Even if Hong Yu was not from that particular Hong family, the fact that Zhang Huaiyi was this deferential meant the man was undeniably formidable. He had only just taken over this jewelry exhibition — if an incident like this got out, there was no telling whether Liang Zhanpeng would ever entrust him with anything again.
This sales associate had cost him his future, his prospects. Had it not been broad daylight with witnesses all around, Liang Jiajie was the sort of man who would genuinely have considered killing her.
At this point, Chen Yingying was trembling.
The way Liang Jiajie had spoken when he raged was truly terrifying. This was the first time she had ever encountered someone with wealth and power who possessed not even a shred of decency.
She glanced at Lin Shuyu and Hong Yu, and found herself wondering — had Liang Jiajie not abruptly changed his manner, would it be one of them kneeling on the floor right now?
But then she looked at Wang Qi standing beside her, and her heart settled slightly. At least with Wang Qi here — a local rich second-generation — Liang Jiajie surely would not dare go too far.
Wang Qi, however, was not thinking along those lines at all.
Wang Qi had finally recalled everything he knew about Liang Jiajie — and the man was nothing less than the great demon king of Huaizhou.
Liang Zhanpeng did have a son, but that son had been carefully sheltered and well-educated, a refined and scholarly young man.
The dirty work that Liang Zhanpeng conducted in Huaizhou was handled almost entirely by this nephew. Someone had once told Wang Qi: in Huaizhou, you might offend Liang Zhanpeng's son and survive — but you must never, under any circumstances, offend Liang Zhanpeng's nephew.
As far as Wang Qi knew, this nephew already had no fewer than ten lives on his hands.
Whatever lay beyond that, he had no way of finding out.
Damn it all.
Why on earth was Hong Yu — that spineless nobody — receiving such fawning attention from Liang Jiajie?
And if Liang Jiajie happened to be displeased with me for some reason, and turned on me instead...
The more Wang Qi thought about it, the more frightened he became.
