Snap!

How could that wretch be here?

Wasn’t she chasing after that idiot Qian Peng just now?

Besides, I barely know that woman. We’ve never even met, so how could she possibly recognize me?

Hong Yu furrowed his brows. Shen Yue, after a brief gasp of surprise, broke into a cold laugh. “Heh, no wonder you put on such a show for Lin Shuyu. So you’re her useless husband, is it?”

“What’s this? Where did you get all that money? Don’t tell me you stole, robbed, or swindled it?”

Shen Yue had indeed gone after Qian Peng, but he’d already lost all patience for this gold-digger. After cursing her out when she caught up, he drove off alone.

Treated that way, Shen Yue realized that this “easy catch” had slipped away for good. Thinking it all stemmed from Lin Shuyu and the masked man, she didn’t hesitate to turn back for the auction.

She’d already made up her mind: once inside, she’d endure whatever she had to. With the masked man gifting Lin Shuyu jewelry worth over ten million, Shen Yue could easily imagine how moved Lin Shuyu would be. As soon as Lin Shuyu did anything remotely improper—be it a kiss or heading to a hotel afterward—Shen Yue would snap a photo and blast it across her social media and all their old classmates’ groups.

Lin Shuyu was a married woman. With those photos, Shen Yue would see her utterly ruined.

Who could have guessed she’d run into the masked man here, mask removed—and that he was none other than Lin Shuyu’s so-called useless husband.

Shen Yue was more than a little annoyed; her previous plan was now ruined.

But as a mistress, Shen Yue was no fool. After a moment’s thought, she sneered and said, “Wasn’t it enjoyable, putting on airs just now, you useless wretch?”

“You humiliated me? Tonight, I’ll make sure you learn what that costs.”

Hong Yu was preparing a cold retort when, to his surprise, the people from the auction began to file out.

Seeing this, Shen Yue immediately shouted, “Everyone! Come look!”

“So the masked man from the auction just now is a useless nobody—a live-in son-in-law!”

What!

The people leaving the auction had been abuzz, wondering who the masked man was, so generous and mysterious.

Now, with Shen Yue’s shrill cries, they froze for a moment—then surged toward the commotion.

A useless nobody?

A live-in son-in-law?

Lin Shuyu was among the crowd. Hearing this, she immediately thought of Hong Yu.

Huang Wenhua, beside her, laughed. “Director Lin, it seems the masked man really was here for you tonight.”

“Isn’t your husband a live-in son-in-law? I hear he’s unemployed—where would he get so much money?”

“You’d better be careful. If you’re harboring a thief at home without knowing it, you’ll bring ruin not just to yourself but to your whole Lin family.”

“The Lin family suffered such huge losses before—haven’t you learned your lesson?”

Lin Shuyu disliked Huang Wenhua, but she had to admit his words merited concern.

If it really was Hong Yu, where could he have gotten that kind of money? Spending so extravagantly without batting an eye—wasn’t that just how a big-time criminal would behave, burning through stolen cash?

Clinging to a shred of hope, Lin Shuyu murmured, “Maybe it’s not my husband. There are plenty of live-in sons-in-law in the world…”

Huang Wenhua chuckled and cut her off. “Director Lin, don’t fool yourself. It just so happens to be a live-in son-in-law, and he just happens to run into you at the auction, then spends over fifteen million on jewelry for you? The world isn’t full of such coincidences.”

Lin Shuyu knew she was deluding herself. But unless she saw Hong Yu with her own eyes, she refused to believe it.

So she hurried forward.

“Everyone saw it, right? This man is Lin Shuyu’s useless husband!” Shen Yue announced at the top of her lungs, as if afraid someone might not hear.

“He’s just a live-in son-in-law, but he dared make fools of us, pretending to be a tycoon in front of all these people!”

“Damn! A tycoon? Everyone here is a billionaire! All those stories about him being some big shot or heir—lies! It was all an act!”

“I bet this pauper doesn’t have a hundred bucks to his name. If I hadn’t seen his wedding photos with Lin Shuyu, I might actually have been fooled!”

Shen Yue’s voice grew louder and louder, while the onlookers exchanged puzzled glances—some still skeptical.

“That can’t be right…”

“Miss, you can exaggerate, but you can’t just make things up!”

“I mean, anyone who spends 15 million on jewelry can’t possibly be a penniless pauper.”

At that moment, the Christie’s host had also joined the crowd, looking visibly uneasy.

If word of this got out, it would be a monumental farce. If Christie’s headquarters investigated, her career would be finished.

The host snapped, “I know you. I saw your argument with this gentleman at the display earlier.”

“You’re slandering our honored Christie’s guest without the slightest proof. Shall I sue you?”

“Furthermore, this gentleman already paid by card. The two pieces of jewelry were fully settled!”

The crowd found the host’s words convincing.

“Hmph! Is this woman just looking for trouble? He’s already paid, so why’s she still shouting?”

“She’s probably just jealous. A mistress who can’t stand to see others happy.”

“What a fool. Unless she’s got proof, she’s just making a scene.”

Shen Yue, now unsettled by the crowd’s rebukes, realized she hadn’t expected Hong Yu to have already paid.

But her eyes darted cunningly, and she shouted, “You want proof, do you?”

“You think I’d stand up and expose him without evidence?”

Hearing her claim to have proof, those who’d previously taken the host’s and Hong Yu’s side fell silent.

No one likes being proven wrong. If Shen Yue really did produce evidence, they’d be even more eager than her to vent their embarrassment by attacking Hong Yu.

“This morning, my husband and I ran into this man at Morgan Bank!” Shen Yue jabbed a finger at Hong Yu. Seeing he remained utterly unruffled, her anger only grew.

“Do you all know what happened? This useless man acted exactly the same as at the auction!”

“Penniless, yet desperate to show off, he pulled out some worthless card—who knows where he picked it up—claiming he was going to withdraw all of Morgan Bank’s cash!”

“And guess what happened?”

“That idiot’s card didn’t have a cent on it and even triggered the alarm! They were about to call the police and have him arrested, but my husband and I, out of the kindness of our hearts, spoke up for him and saved him from a disaster!”

“I regret it now! I never should have helped someone like him. If I hadn’t been wearing sunglasses, I’d have recognized this useless wretch right away, and for that I must take some responsibility.”

Shen Yue’s tirade left the crowd utterly stunned.
