Chapter Four: Ex-Husband, Please Don’t Bark Like a Dog (Please Bookmark)
“Only I can save your wife,” Gu Sihui said earnestly to Heng Binwei. “If you leave her in Bai Nanyan’s care, she won’t survive past next month.”
“At least Bai Nanyan holds a two-star pharmacist qualification. What about you?” came a mocking voice from within the cage, dripping with scorn.
Gu Sihui looked over in disbelief. The Xuanwu beast husband, who had been somewhat friendly to her before, now regarded her with derision, his every gesture dripping with contempt.
Heng Binwei listened to Gong Zhengqing’s words and then turned to Gu Sihui, waiting quietly for her response.
Gu Sihui longed to say she came from a family of traditional Chinese medicine practitioners, that she was a medical doctorate, having grown up surrounded by herbals and texts. But all that had been in her past life.
She wasn’t sure if the concept of traditional Chinese medicine even existed here, and she was certain her doctorate would be untraceable in this world’s system.
Instead of answering directly, she asked, “How does one obtain the pharmacist qualification here?”
“Heh.” Gong Zhengqing’s face twisted with even more sarcasm, sneering coldly. “You don’t even know how to get a pharmacist’s license, yet you dare to blabber nonsense here and slander her reputation?”
Gu Sihui was displeased by his evasive reply and was about to retort when a clear, gentle female voice floated in from the open door.
“Tomorrow is the pharmacist qualification exam for the first half of the year. If you’re interested, you’re welcome to watch me take the test to become a level three pharmacist.”
Bai Nanyan entered, pushing Su Qian in a wheelchair. Behind her followed five strikingly handsome men, each with their own charm.
The fox-eared youth at the edge was particularly captivating.
His upturned fox eyes were faintly reddened beneath, a high, straight nose framed his deep brows, and his sky-blue eyes held a casual yet tender expression.
Silver-white hair cascaded down, two large tails flickering subtly beneath his robe.
“Xi Mo! You actually dare show yourself?”
His gaze remained fixed on Bai Nanyan until Shao Feichen called his name, after which he reluctantly looked at Gu Sihui.
In the next moment, his relaxed brows furrowed tightly, his sky-blue eyes revealing undisguised disgust. “What are you doing here? I told you, I don’t need your medicine.”
“Ah Mo, don’t say that,” Bai Nanyan said, glancing sideways at him with disapproval. “After all, little sister sold Gong Zhengqing to get medicine to treat your injury. If you reject her like this, she’ll be hurt.”
Her words caused hesitation to flicker across Xi Mo’s face.
After a moment, with a look of condescension, he extended his hand toward Gu Sihui. “Fine, give it to me.”
“Do you want a lump of dung or not?” Gu Sihui grabbed the broken sword from Shao Feichen’s waist and swung it hard at Xi Mo’s outstretched claws.
Startled, Xi Mo quickly withdrew his hand and glared furiously. “Are you crazy?”
“Heh, do you believe I could be crazier?” Gu Sihui rolled her eyes and fully embraced her madness. “Who do you think you are, feeling so grand? Who said I was going to sell Gong Zhengqing? It’s just spousal teasing; I was only scaring him a little.
And you, you pathetic ex-husband, who do you think you are barking around here?”
After roasting Xi Mo, Gu Sihui turned her fire toward Bai Nanyan. “Who asked you to come show off your amateur-hour antics? Don’t get too full of yourself, big sister.”
Bai Nanyan was used to Gu Sihui’s sharp tongue and smiled good-naturedly. “I should have asked more clearly, but actually, I came to congratulate Duke Wende.”
She looked at Heng Binwei with a smile. “I am pleased to report that the lady is now able to get out of bed.”
Heng Binwei had already taken a quick step toward Su Qian when he first saw her.
Though still weak in the wheelchair, Su Qian managed a faint smile when she saw Heng Binwei’s eyes reddened with emotion. “Ah Heng, thank you for everything these days.”
“Qianqian, don’t say such foolish things.” Heng Binwei grasped her weakly raised hand, warming it in his palm, pressing his cheek against its back. “As long as you’re well, I’ll do anything for you.”
“Rest assured, Duke Wende,” Bai Nanyan confidently assured Heng Binwei, “once I pass the level three pharmacist exam, I will do everything in my power to heal the lady. I guarantee she will recover within a month.”
“Oh please, talk is cheap when you won’t do the work,” Gu Sihui sneered, embracing the role of the venomous villainess.
“What did you eat to make your mouth so foul?”
Yu Hua, Bai Nanyan’s chief protector, a Golden Jiao beast husband, couldn’t stand it and retorted sharply.
“Heh, your nose is full of filth; everything you smell reeks,” Gu Sihui shot back without hesitation.
“Gu Sihui!” Xi Mo raised his voice. “Even if you’re crazy, have some sense of occasion! It’s because you’re always this deranged and always picking on Nanyan that I can’t stand you!”
“Oh, so the problem is infidelity and unfaithfulness, but you want to make all these roundabout excuses?” Gu Sihui rolled her eyes. “Besides, there are plenty of people who can’t stand me. Who the hell do you think you are?”
Having vented, Gu Sihui resumed her serious tone. “The lady’s constitution is frail and weak; she can’t tolerate strong tonics. You started her treatment with extremely potent and rare herbs. It had some effect, yes—”
She shifted her gaze to Bai Nanyan. “But have you thought about whether the lady’s current state can even handle such a heavy tonic?”
Speaking on her area of expertise, Gu Sihui seemed to shine, and Bai Nanyan briefly avoided her gaze.
But she quickly recovered, her expression turning somewhat cold.
“Little sister, I know since birth you’ve been competing with me, thinking I stole your spotlight, so you look at me with disdain and make things difficult for me,” Bai Nanyan said with a hint of disappointed reproach. “I could tolerate everything else, make allowances for you, except when it comes to medical practice.
I have my own professional ethics; I cannot allow you to recklessly harm my patient out of selfishness.”
She turned to Heng Binwei and pointed out the obvious fact.
“The truth is, under my care, the lady has regained consciousness and now has the strength to get out of bed.”
Indeed, regardless of everything, Bai Nanyan’s methods had shown more effectiveness than those of the incompetent doctors who had treated her for so long with no result.
Heng Binwei’s doubts, stirred by Gu Sihui’s words, lessened.
Bai Nanyan smiled and tugged at her dark pharmacist robe. “Besides, I am a level two pharmacist certified by the Pharmacists Association.”
Heng Binwei’s last trace of suspicion was about to vanish when Gu Sihui suddenly interjected, “What if I told you I could achieve a level five pharmacist qualification?”
Her words dropped like a bomb, leaving everyone stunned.
“Gu Sihui, I told you this isn’t a place for your madness,” Xi Mo said with disgust, glaring at her. This madwoman was always like this—crazy anytime, anywhere, without regard for the occasion.
He didn’t care if she embarrassed herself, but it dragged their beast husbands into disgrace too.
Fortunately, he had already successfully divorced her. There would be no more entanglements between them in this lifetime!
With that thought, Xi Mo breathed a sigh of relief and cast a sympathetic glance at Shao Feichen.
