Chapter 108: Who Are You Threatening by Threatening to Jump?
The reception area was staffed entirely by beautiful young women working in the Warner Building. For these youthful and attractive girls, the reception desk was hardly the best choice—it was a place that relied on youthful looks, destined to be replaced sooner or later by even younger faces.
Under the pressures of their limited roles and uncertain futures at the company, these girls found themselves compelled to work while simultaneously enhancing their skills. Whenever another position opened up within the company, they eagerly signed up for interviews. This was their best option, after all; interviewing within the same company naturally offered some advantage over outsiders.
This practice had remained unchanged from the beginning. When Wang Hu was arrogant and overbearing, many of these girls left, while quite a few stayed. In truth, Wang Hu had little interest in the reception staff—their only value lay in their beauty. The kinds of things Wang Hu involved himself in were beyond their reach, so despite their looks, these women never faced any workplace exploitation or unsavory advances.
This morning, as they arrived at work, the girls were the first to notice something amiss. Yang Changfeng sat boldly at the entrance, but none of the security staff were in sight. That was an unmistakably strong signal. Then, while cleaning, they discovered that the desks had been moved, shards of glass lay beneath the reception counter, and there were bloodstains mingled with the strong scent of alcohol. It was clear there had been a fight in the lobby the previous night. Judging by the situation now, it seemed likely that Wang Hu had been beaten and possibly even killed, and the company had reverted to the hands of its original owner.
Working under a female boss gave these girls a greater sense of security—no worries about inappropriate behavior from the boss. Once they guessed that Wang Hu’s clique had been ousted, the group of girls were exhilarated for quite some time.
However, Zhang Baode, newly promoted to a supervisory position, caught the attention and envy of these young women.
They liked Zhang Baode—he was honest and never flirted with the girls. Even when teased, he would just laugh it off and busy himself with work.
Before Yang Changfeng arrived at the lobby, the girls were teasing Zhang Baode, urging him to celebrate his promotion by treating them to a meal.
The young shift leader at the front desk was about twenty-three or twenty-four, curvy and with a striking face. She often teased Zhang Baode, and now she was relentless. As Zhang Baode checked the installation of surveillance cameras at the front desk, the girl persistently asked, “Boss Bao, no need to spend your own money. Now that you’re a leader, just take care of me, and I’ll be your kept woman!”
Zhang Baode’s eyes squinted slightly as he smiled warmly, replying, “Don’t bully me, alright? Finding a good boyfriend is the proper way. Take care of yourself.”
Flustered by her own teasing, she quickly added, “Don’t cause trouble for me! My family member is coming to interview this afternoon—boss asked her to help. You can’t make it so I can’t even get through the door when I go home, okay?”
Watching the technician install the surveillance cameras after a phone call, Zhang Baode went out to find Yang Changfeng. He saw two vice presidents seizing a good opportunity inside an office. Looking back, he noticed the vice president in charge of logistics wandering suspiciously in the corridor for quite some time.
“Thought the cameras were installed for nothing? Dream on!” Zhang Baode muttered under his breath as he retrieved a PVC pipe from the front desk and quickly called Yang Changfeng over.
The two of them positioned themselves, one in front and one behind, to block the logistics vice president’s path.
“What are you trying to do?” the vice president panicked, aware that Yang Changfeng was a ruthless man who wouldn’t hesitate to kill. He figured Zhang Baode was a timid fellow and tried to break through him instead.
But Zhang Baode was no pushover. With one swing of the pipe, he stunned the vice president.
“Do you still respect the law?” the vice president hissed, clutching his head as he ran toward the elevator. Glancing back, he threatened, “Push me too far and I’ll jump off to show you!”
Everyone exchanged bewildered looks.
Was there really such a shameless man?
Zhang Baode snapped, “Don’t think no one knows what you’ve been doing. The chaos in the company recently was all because of people like you, taking what you shouldn’t and trying to run. Who do you think you are?”
Clearly, this was backed by the boss.
These vice presidents who once acted so high and mighty were finished.
The smart ones immediately followed Zhang Baode. The girls at the front desk boldly raised their fists and shouted, “Yeah, who do they think they are?”
They thought about their own hard work—standing on their feet for eight hours straight, legs swollen to the point even stockings were hard to remove, earning only meager wages each month—while these men casually reached out for unimaginable sums. Few could remain calm about such injustice.
The vice president didn’t expect even the front desk girls to dare to scold him. His eyes flashed in anger as he cursed, “Who gave you the guts? Believe me…”
Yang Changfeng grabbed a stool and smashed it down coldly. “What else do you want to do?”
“I—I’m not going to fight you! I’ll call the police! Yes, I’ll call the cops!” The vice president pulled out his phone and pretended to threaten them, but didn’t actually move his fingers.
In this situation, calling the police would only be his own doom. If the police came, they wouldn’t leave empty-handed. Everything he’d taken was recorded in the company’s accounts.
Yang Changfeng said calmly, “Take your time to call them. If you don’t, you’re not even human.”
The vice president hesitated, then stomped his foot. “Wait, I’m going to find the boss.”
Just as he stepped into the elevator, Yang Changfeng waved to Zhang Baode. “Old Zhang, stop the elevator.”
No one had ever seen such a cruel person in the company before.
Trapping a living man inside the elevator—he’d suffocate in there. This was real punishment for the vice president.
Less than fifteen seconds later, as the elevator reached the top floor, it suddenly stopped.
The girls at the front desk exchanged glances. This boss Yang was no kinder than Wang Hu. But at least his attitude toward ordinary employees was really good. When he first arrived, he greeted everyone with a smile. Now, as a vice president-level leader, he still didn’t boss anyone around. Rumor had it he was very close to the owner, so no need to worry about any ulterior motives.
However, for some girls, this meant they couldn’t approach him as easily anymore!
Zhang Baode gave Yang Changfeng a big thumbs-up, grinning. “The boss sure knows how to handle things. Let’s see how he’s going to jump now.”
Yang Changfeng shrugged. “No way. These days, too many public relations experts. If that guy really jumped, the company’s image would plummet. Now it’s settled—no more worries. Oh, time’s almost up, let’s head to the conference room.”
Turning back to look at the security guards still standing at attention by the entrance, Yang Changfeng shouted, “Front desk staff, keep a close eye on them. Anyone slacking off, I want their names noted. Remember this—I’ll ask the boss for a bonus for all of you, equivalent to a week’s salary!”
The security guards shivered. Damn, this boss was ruthless! None had ever seen a leader so severe!
