Chapter 079: The Dragon Crossing the River, It's Your Turn to Act
As soon as Song Kai saw Wu Hongying coming downstairs, his expression changed instantly. Damn. Grabbing his car keys and phone, Song Kai dashed into Tang Ying’s bedroom.
Tang Ying, still groggy, had just sat up in bed. Seeing Song Kai barge in, she froze for a moment, then hurriedly pulled the blanket over herself. “You little brat, getting bold, aren’t you,” she said angrily—after all, she had slept stark naked the night before.
Song Kai hadn’t expected Tang Ying to be so audacious. It was one thing for her to wander around the house without a bra, but to sleep naked as well? Still, that wasn’t the point.
He quickly clasped his hands to her in a pleading gesture. “Help me out, don’t say a word, I just need to hide for a minute, really.”
“What are you hiding for?” Tang Ying asked.
At that moment, the front door slammed open with a loud bang.
“Song Kai, you bastard, get your ass out here!” Wu Hongying shouted furiously. “That’s the second motorcycle you’ve wrecked! Are you eating motorcycles for breakfast?!”
Song Kai cowered in Tang Ying’s room, not daring to utter a sound.
“Get out here!”
Wu Hongying searched the place thoroughly.
Just then, her phone rang. She answered, then said, “Alright, alright.”
A moment later, still fuming, she shouted, “Song Kai, get your ass out here and take me to a crime scene, right now! Damn it, I’ll let the motorcycle slide for now.”
“Really?” Song Kai breathed a sigh of relief and opened Tang Ying’s door.
Wu Hongying saw Song Kai hiding in Tang Ying’s room. At the sight of him, her anger flared and she kicked at him.
Song Kai knew he was in the wrong this time and didn’t dare retaliate. He just dodged out of the way.
Wu Hongying grabbed Song Kai’s boxers and yanked hard, tearing them to shreds.
“You pervert!” Song Kai cursed.
Wu Hongying grabbed him again, and while Song Kai was distracted pulling at his boxers, she suddenly flipped him over her shoulder.
Clearly, Wu Hongying had proper training—she tossed Song Kai straight into the air.
Luckily, Tang Ying’s big bed was right there.
Song Kai landed with a thud and felt a little dizzy.
“Bastard! Give me back my motorcycle!” Wu Hongying lunged at him again.
Tang Ying was truly exasperated now. She shouted, “You two lunatics, take your fight outside! OUTSIDE!”
But Wu Hongying, like a little lioness, snatched up the blanket, threw it over Song Kai, and began pummeling him.
Tang Ying was furious. Didn’t they see she wasn’t wearing any clothes?!
“Wu Hongying, you maniac, get out! Give me back my blanket!” Tang Ying shouted angrily.
Wu Hongying turned and, seeing Tang Ying’s bare body, paused and suddenly burst out laughing.
Song Kai poked his head out from under the blanket, equally stunned.
“What the hell are you staring at?!”
Tang Ying grabbed a pillow to cover herself. “Both of you, get out NOW, or I’ll lose it! I’ll throw you two freeloading troublemakers out for good!”
At the mention of rent, Song Kai and Wu Hongying immediately shrank back.
They hurried out of the room.
Wu Hongying pointed at Song Kai. “Now, get changed and take me to the crime scene. Damn it, there goes my bonus for the month! I’m so pissed off!”
Song Kai didn’t dare refuse and quickly agreed.
He changed clothes, grabbed his car keys, and took Wu Hongying to his new car.
His own car—what a thrill! Even if he didn’t have a license yet.
“Want me to buy you breakfast as an apology for the motorcycle?” Song Kai offered.
“No time,” Wu Hongying waved him off.
“That won’t do. No matter how busy, you have to eat breakfast—it’s good for your health. Hold on,” Song Kai said, stopping at a breakfast shop.
He bought every meat bun they had, then returned to the car with them.
Wu Hongying looked at the mountain of buns—at least forty—and was speechless.
“Are you a pig?” she grumbled, biting into a beef bun.
Song Kai drove while eating. “Where to now?”
“Turn left up ahead. Set the GPS for Dawu Town, to a villa on the mountain,” Wu Hongying replied.
Song Kai nodded and headed straight for the outskirts.
Dawu Town bordered the city. Many villages had been relocated, and the government had built villas on the land. The idea was good—attract people to buy villas—but the infrastructure hadn’t kept up, and, crucially, security was lacking. Most of the villas were no better than rural houses.
The roads weren’t great either.
Song Kai brought Wu Hongying to a villa. Dozens of police cars were already parked around it.
He swallowed the last bun. “We’re here. You go ahead. Quite the scene, huh?”
Wu Hongying headed inside.
Song Kai turned off the engine and glanced in. Blood was everywhere. How could there be so much?
“These times… not safe,” Song Kai muttered, preparing to leave.
“Song Kai, come here.” Wu Hongying called out to him.
“Me?” Song Kai asked, puzzled.
“Stop talking nonsense. Get over here.”
Song Kai rolled his eyes and walked over. “Sister Ying, I’m not an auxiliary officer. Besides, I just ate more than thirty meat buns—don’t show me anything too gross.”
“I want you to take a look at this guy’s skills,” Wu Hongying said.
Song Kai was about to grumble, but as soon as he reached the entrance, his complaints died in his throat.
In the yard, over a dozen heads lay scattered across the ground, while the bodies were stacked in the swimming pool, floating in the water.
No wonder the blood had reached outside the gate.
Inside the house, there were more corpses—four women in bikinis, and two men. One man sat in a chair, his eyes wide with terror, his body covered in blood and wounds.
“He was tortured for information before he died,” Wu Hongying said.
Song Kai glanced at the other corpses, narrowed his eyes, then turned to leave.
“Hey, where are you going?” Wu Hongying called after him.
“To throw up,” Song Kai replied irritably.
Damn it, is this woman insane? She knew he’d just eaten a ton of meat buns.
Wu Hongying hurried after him. “Song Kai, I didn’t mean to gross you out.”
Leaning against his car, Song Kai lit a cigarette. He didn’t really smoke; one puff made him cough three times.
Wu Hongying laughed. “Kid, trying to look all deep and brooding. Come on, tell me what you think.”
Last time, Song Kai had taken one look and figured out that the victim, Lu Cheng, had been killed by a master. This time, Wu Hongying was sure he’d spot plenty again.
Song Kai gave her a look. “What do you mean? Sure, these guys died miserably, but it’s obvious they’re all thugs—gathered in a villa, probably up to no good. Tattoos, drinking, and there are signs of drug use inside. Looks like karma—crooks preying on crooks.”
“Exactly, gangsters turning on each other. But do you know who did it?” Wu Hongying asked.
“Who?”
“The River Dragon.”
Song Kai scratched his head. “This guy’s ruthless, and skilled. The wounds are clean, both hands wielding blades, but the left hand is faster than the right—a real killer.”
“I knew you’d spot a lot.” Wu Hongying patted his face. “But what you said, we already know. This River Dragon isn’t just a master with a blade, he’s an expert marksman too. Used to operate along the border—a top drug lord. We’ve hunted him for ages; many have died trying, but he always slipped away. Then, for some reason, he showed up in Yanbei City. The whole Public Security Bureau was on edge; the ministry was personally overseeing the hunt. But he vanished without a trace.”
Song Kai listened intently.
Wu Hongying continued, “Yanbei City is right next to Beijing—a first-tier city in a key location. We were terrified he’d cause a major incident. But over a year passed peacefully, and River Dragon didn’t stir up any trouble. Then, half a year ago, there was a case in your city, Tengyun—a group of international mercenaries killed. The killer used twin pistols and was highly skilled. That’s when we realized River Dragon had come to Tengyun. This time, only my captain and I were sent, secretly, to avoid drawing attention.”
Song Kai looked at her.
She sighed. “It was a routine reassignment, to keep things quiet. So now, I really am just a regular cop, getting chewed out by my boss every day.”
Song Kai laughed out loud.
Wu Hongying said, “We don’t know why River Dragon suddenly came to Tengyun, but obviously, this is the best chance to catch him. At the border, he can vanish into the mountains. In Yanbei, he disappeared without a trace. But here, he’s walked right into our net. With so many dead this time, the higher-ups won’t be able to hold back anymore. Song Kai, get ready—it’s probably your turn to step in.”
“Hmm… what? Me?” Song Kai stared at her. “Damn, you want me to help solve the River Dragon case?”
“Relax, it won’t be dangerous. Just meet a few people for me, that’s all. Go on now.” Wu Hongying waved him off.
Song Kai hurried to his car and drove away immediately. What the hell does this have to do with me?!
But why did River Dragon come here? Could it be connected to his parents’ murder?
And that ruthless woman who killed with a steel rod—what was she doing looking for River Dragon?
Song Kai frowned, then sighed. He’d have to put these thoughts aside for now and get the jade bracelet to increase his strength first.
Oh, and practice his marksmanship.
He drove straight to the airport.
After waiting there for two hours, he saw Zhang Hongjun and his wife Xiumin come out.
“This way,” Song Kai called to them.
Zhang Hongjun was beaming. His wife Xiumin was fashionably dressed, her skin smooth and delicate, and she looked even prettier than in her wedding photos.
Suddenly, Song Kai understood why Zhang Hongjun was so excited. Damn, even though his wife had been haunted and her body had suffered a little, the result was as good as plastic surgery.
“Hello, Mr. Song, thank you for saving me,” Xiumin said, reaching out to shake his hand, her voice carrying a faint coquettishness…
