Chapter 29: Cotton Candy

Centered in the first row were the words "Letter of Apology."
The body of the text began with "Dear Xie Xu."
Xie Xu's eyelid twitched—this... this woman wants to taint my reputation!
Too much!
He thought so inwardly, yet his gaze involuntarily settled on the rest of the letter.
"I'm truly sorry. I shouldn't have called you manipulative, nor should I have falsely accused you of wanting me to switch seats just to break up me and Ziyi, the famous pair of sisters. Oh, and most importantly, I absolutely shouldn't have joked about how sharing a desk with you was a hardship for me. As you said, you asked me to switch seats for my own good. So, really, it was a hardship for you to sit with me. I've come to fully realize my mistake, and I hope the kindest, most generous, intelligent, and gentle Xie Xu will graciously forgive me."
After reading, Xie Xu couldn't help but let a smile tug at his lips, though he retorted with a biting tone, "What's with you, woman? Kind, generous, intelligent, and gentle are words used to describe women! You really are a pig."
His usual sharp tongue.
But Lu Yiqi no longer cared about his biting words; after all, she was often called a pig by him and had long since gotten used to it.
Seeing him smile, she knew he must have forgiven her. So she asked, almost ceremonially, "Whatever, whether those words describe a man or a woman, since you smiled, shall we let bygones be bygones? I'll take it as you've forgiven me."
Xie Xu immediately wiped the smile from his face and stubbornly replied, "I wasn't smiling!"
Lu Yiqi followed along, "Alright, alright, you weren't smiling, you weren't smiling. Then we're good again, right?"

A few seconds later, Xie Xu responded with a very noble and aloof "hmm," and, quite naturally, opened his math book on the desk, slipping her apology letter inside while Lu Yiqi wasn't looking.
Just then, Lu Yiqi turned her head again: "Oh right, were you about to call me earlier? What for?"
Her sudden movement startled Xie Xu; his hand trembled as he closed the math book, and it fell onto the desk with a loud "thud." Lu Yiqi asked in confusion, "What are you doing?"
Xie Xu forced himself to sound calm, "Nothing."
Lu Yiqi responded with an "oh." "By the way, you still haven't answered my previous question."
"Ah, oh, I wasn't calling you. You must've heard wrong."
"Oh..." Lu Yiqi turned her head back.
Did she really mishear?
But it seemed he'd been muttering something that sounded like the "lu" from her name.
Forget it, whether he was calling her or not.
After reconciling with Xie Xu, Lu Yiqi was quietly, unmistakably happy all over.
On the way home that afternoon, they happened upon an old lady selling cotton candy.

Suddenly, Lu Yiqi was tempted. "Xie Xu, wait for me, I want to buy some cotton candy."
Xie Xu grumbled, "Women are such trouble," but stopped and waited for her.
"Grandma, I'd like one pink and one green, please."
The cotton candy was quickly made. After paying, Lu Yiqi carried one in each hand and walked toward Xie Xu.
When she reached him, she held out her hand, looking up at him. "This green one is for you."
Xie Xu lowered his head, his deep black eyes fixed on her.
The streetlights suddenly flickered on, casting a warm, yellow glow on Lu Yiqi's face and bathing it in gentle light.
For some reason, he reached out and pinched her soft, rosy cheek.
Perhaps he misjudged the pressure; Lu Yiqi winced and furrowed her brows in pain. "What are you doing?"
